Forex Killer Software – I Didn’t Know Something Like This Even Existed!

HashFlare

Forex trading is all about catching the trend at the right time with the right currency pair and then placing your trade with the correct exit price in mind. It’s all about doing things with the proper timing. Achieve this and you will be right on your way to becoming a profitable forex trader. I’m sure many other forex traders will be in the same position of great expectation and delight when they learn in more detail what the Forex Killer Software is all about.

As I just mentioned above forex trading is all about proper timing when placing trades in the market. So it has been very common for many traders to hire the services of “signals generators”. These are companies that will email with the trades they have concluded are the most probable ones of resulting in a profit for you for a given day. As you surely know by now when dealing with forex trading you need a compass that will point your trades in the right direction and this signals you are being provided play that role.

But not all signals are always as reliable as you wished and the good ones are never free. They can be quite expensive so you need to hold a big capital in order to allow yourself the luxury of trading signals by any of these companies out there.

So here we arrive to the question you should be asking yourself by now and which is the main reason for the Forex Killer Software to exist; why would you pay hundreds of dollars as a monthly fee to companies for forex trading signals when you can create them by yourself with a forex advanced trading signal system?

Yes now you can create your own forex trading signals without emails arriving late and most important, without the high prices you would have to pay for them.

Make Money Online – 7 Strategies to Help You Make Money Online and Work From Home

HashFlare

On January 1, 2010 A Google search for “Make Money Online” showed a whopping 11 million results! There are so many confusing options that it is hard to decide which option to choose. What is more, “Make Money Online” is synonymous with scams. The Internet is full of Get Rich Quick Scams and Make Money Online Scams.

In fact it is very difficult to find legitimate ways to work from home and make money online. However, if it was really impossible to make money online then popular websites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Google, etc. would not be making millions of dollars on the internet. Are they not “Making Money Online?” Is it necessary to be a geek if you got to make money online? What exactly does it take to become a successful Internet entrepreneur even if you are not a software engineer?

Throughout the ages we have seen how the poor wish that they had more money to enjoy their lives, and how the rich wish that they had more time and better health to enjoy their lives. Some people genuinely need more money. Some people desire to work from home and spend more time with their family. Some people, whether they desire more money or not, are so caught up in making a living that they forget how to live. Whatever it is, the truth is that most of us often wish to have more money and more free time. What would make it possible to get the best of both the worlds? Anyone who wants to have lots of money, lots of free time, lots of fun, better health, more happiness, more freedom, more success, and more control over their lives should pause and reflect, “Is it really possible to have all of them together or is that a pipe dream”? Contrary to what some ancient philosophers might have said, in this new age of the Internet it is indeed possible to live this dream and you will soon discover how easy it is to make your dreams come true!

Have you ever thought what you will do when you have lots of money and lots of free time at your disposal? Have you ever visualized a new, exciting lifestyle which gives you the freedom to live the life that you love and do all that you have ever wanted to do – be your own boss, live life on your own terms, travel around the world, buy a luxurious car, finance your college education, step into your own house, spend more quality time with your family and friends, take care of a loved one, take your family on a holiday, pursue your hobbies, devote yourself to a cause, or buy that expensive gift for someone special? What will you do when you have an abundance of money, time, freedom, and control over your life?

Hard work pays, but sometimes people who work too hard often have a hard time enjoying their health, life, and money. The equation for real freedom is: –

Lots of Money + Lots of Free Time = Lots of Fun!

A mobile lifestyle that uses technology to put your income on autopilot is indeed the new world dream! More and more people are getting bored of bureaucracy, red tape, dirty office politics, and the typical 9 to 5 rat race. These are the fetters that bind the feet of creative, adventurous souls who want to live life to its fullest.

A “mobile lifestyle” is a lifestyle that gives you the freedom to work from wherever you wish, and whenever you wish. It allows you to make big money and still have lots of fun and lots of free time. Even millionaires covet this lifestyle, because often millionaires don’t have the time to enjoy their riches.

Even if you are hard pressed for time, take one small step in the right direction at a time, and you will finally find that you have taken that giant leap of coming out of the rut sooner than you think. You will soon find yourself enjoying a new, exciting lifestyle.

Thanks to the modern Internet age and the ease of global trade, it is possible for anyone to reach millions of people worldwide and grow rich without any soul-crushing, back-breaking hard work. To earn while you sleep or while you spend quality time with your family and friends is no longer pulp-fiction but reality! Working long hours stuck in a stuffy office is a thing of the past. Today whether you are relaxing on the world’s most beautiful beach or sailing to your dream destination in a cruise ship, the Internet allows you to reach out to millions of people worldwide and to run your business from anywhere. And as you already know, computers continue to work for you while you are partying, sleeping, or dreaming!! Have you ever imagined what it would be like to earn millions while you are on a vacation with your family and friends, enjoying your life?

Here Are The Top 7 Ways To Make Money Online, working from home or from anywhere you want: –

1.) Earn Money by Selling / Promoting Other People’s Products or Services (Join Affiliate Programs):

Affiliate Programs are also known as “Associate Programs”, “Referral Programs”, “Partner Programs”, etc. An affiliate program is a business model in which a business rewards you for each visitor or customer that you send to their business website. You sign up for free with a merchant to advertise their products or services on your blog or website, and then you get paid a commission (upto 75% of the sale value!) based on the sales that you generate. A cool way to automate your income is to join a recurring affiliate program. High earning potential and highly recommended.

2.) Make Money by Becoming a Professional Blogger:

If you are passionate about writing, you can earn money by becoming a professional blogger. If you have good writing skills and if you are very passionate about a niche topic then you can write blogs and make tens of thousands of dollars per month by sharing your knowledge and helping millions of people who read your blogs to choose the right products and services. However, your success as a professional blogger not only depends on your writing skills and sincerity but also on your marketing skills.

3.) Earn Money by Monetizing Your Blog or Website:

Blog monetization or website monetization is the process of converting existing traffic being sent to a particular blog or website into revenue. You do that by displaying advertisements and/or banners on your site. Every time someone clicks an advertisement on your site you get paid an amount ranging from a few cents to several dollars, based upon a number of factors. These advertisements are called Pay Per Click (PPC) advertisements. To display PPC advertisements and banners on your blog or website you need to create free accounts with AdSense (or other similar sites such as Obeus, Bidvertiser, AdBrite, Chitika, Kontera, AdHitz, etc.) and then copy and paste the HTML code which they will provide you for your site. This is a neat way to autopilot your income. Another way to monetize your blogs and website is to join free affiliate programs and display affiliate advertisements. In fact, you will make much more money with affiliate programs than with PPC advertisements.

4.) Earn Money by Selling Photographs and Drawings Online:

Here is the coolest way to have fun and get paid for it – travel around the world (or just around your own neighborhood), take good quality photographs, upload them to sites such as ShutterStock, iStockPhoto, etc. for free and get paid each and every time someone downloads a copy of any of your photographs! These photographs should have some commercial value. Remember, these graphics are purchased by professional web designers, screen saver developers, magazine editors, and other people who will use them for commercial purposes. If you are good at drawing, you can get paid to draw by scanning your drawings and selling them in the same way as you sell photographs. For the free spirited, artistic soul this is the perfect, fun way of making money online.

5.) Earn Money by Selling Items on eBay and Other Similar Sites:

Many people earn hundreds, even millions of dollars by selling things on eBay, CQout, eBid, Amazon, and other eCommerce sites. You can sell almost everything that is legal – electronics, cars, clothing, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods, digital cameras, antiques, real estate, etc. This is a perfect work from home job and you save a lot of money because by working from home you don’t have to pay any shop rent and other shop or store related expenses such as the electricity and maintenance bills. Apart from that you are selling to millions of potential customers worldwide, and you have the freedom to work whenever you want. You are your own boss. You can exponentially increase your revenues by simultaneously selling on eBay and other competing sites (e.g. CQout, which is popular in Europe, especially in the UK). Some

sites even allow you to list your products for free.

6.) Earn Money by Selling Your Own Product:

If the idea of inventing a new product and making a fortune by selling it scares you, think again! A product can be something as simple as an eBook, or a T-shirt designed by you. Whether it is a simple, 10 page report in the form of a.pdf eBook or a sophisticated software product, you can be assured of making a fortune by selling a good product. If you have conceptualized a product but don’t know how to develop it, you can hire experts/engineers to do it for you from elance.com, scriptlance.com, etc. If you have already created a great downloadable informational product, then sit back and relax – all you have to do is to list it on ClickBank and thousands of affiliates will promote it for you for a commission. You will sell thousands of copies of your informational product without any efforts from you!

Income Automated? Having others sell your products for a commission is the best way to put your income on autopilot. This is what I mean by “earn while you sleep”. [However, if you lose your sleep and wake every few hours to check your increasing account balance, don’t blame me;) ] If your products are concrete, tangible objects then you can sell them on the eCommerce sites described above. If your product is a downloadable eBook, software, video, or some other informational product you might also try out PayLoadz.com and e-Junkie.com in addition to ClickBank.com.

7.) Make Real Big Money Online – The Geek Way to Make Money Online:

This is the ultimate! If you are a techie, then to make real big money, and we mean “REAL B-I-G MONEY” you need to create and own a membership website and make it extremely popular and commercially successful like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. Sounds difficult? Believe me, it isn’t!!

According to Inc.com, Markus Frind, a programmer learning ASP.NET, single handedly created a free dating website while he was still learning ASP.NET. He works just one hour a day but makes a whopping $10,000,000 USD per year (2008 estimates) from Ads that appear within user profiles!!!

How did he do it? He kept things simple and operational costs low! And while other dating websites were charging a subscription fee to users, Markus provided the full functionality of his website to users for FREE! When I created a Plentyoffish account I was surprised to see its simple user interface, low quality of images, and a non-existent customer service. The point that I want to make is that inspite of these drawbacks, the website manages to make 10 million dollars per year for its singleton owner!

The “Geek Way” is for Techies/Computer Geeks/Software Engineers, but then it is very easy for techies and maybe for you too! If you are a software engineer or a computer science student, you should give this a serious thought. If you are not a technical person but have a great idea, hire engineers and technical experts to make exactly what you tell them. You can hire them from several places such as Elance.com, scriptlance.com, etc.

Reflections on an Introduction to a Poetry Anthology Entitled ‘Africa, Where Art Thou?’

HashFlare

It is very hard to fall in love with something and give yourself over to it completely. Why do I write? I pay attention to what came before and then I fast forward to a time when I sense people will come after me (when I am no longer here) who will survive their own possession of a third World War inside their minds more than anywhere else. I think about their lives and what impact my writing will have on them in the future. Nothing has really seemed to change for the teenagers, the so-called phenomena of the ‘lost generation’. I write for them too (those who have not known any happiness or peace of mind in their lives, any warmth or emotional sensitivity. I feel love for them and empathy and this is the only way that I can express what I think and feel because when I speak, the words are not often there) who are growing up on the wrong side of the tracks in my neighbourhood. It has made me want to claim an identity for myself that is not a bitter pill to swallow. I am an African writer who represents a disenfranchised, marginalised, underprivileged youth who are on the whole ignored, seen as an unwanted burden because we do not seem to fit the mould of being rich and educated. Our lives are shadowed by loss, found in the translations of the warring factors of life and love, the measure of loss until we stop for death. When are the leaders on this continent going to do something about the demotivated youth? Why don’t we have more role models in Africa who lead their lives with Christian morals and values in the very fibre of their being? I question everything. As a writer I am curious about life, our inhibitions and the secrets and lies we shelve and that we go our whole lives not divulging. I want women who work in the real world to help empower girl children who have low self-esteem, come from single-parent homes, who are dependent on grants to fill their baby’s mouth and malnourished belly to start educating themselves about the world they live in today. We, as men and women have to discover and cement the original, the sincere, the authentic and the destinies of young outstanding African men and women in time and history as beloved and cherished men and women. Without an identity, first and foremost, you will never believe that you can do anything.

You will inspire nothing, you will be false, transparent, a fake, reckless and endanger yourself, and you will believe in nothing. You will have no faith in yourself to accomplish great things with humility and reach and undertake small victories with wisdom at tremendous sacrifice. In due course racism, xenophobia, prejudice, sexism, ageism, cities across South Africa where the Group Areas Act was enforced (the racism of which we never speak and pretend it is not there even though it still exists) will come to an unholy demise, a sticky end, though not soon enough for the want of trying and the scourge of all these daily challenges that we face, the chills that it comes with that run up and down our spines will resurface again and again until it is dealt with in a manner deserving of its severity. Amandhla awethu! It has begun. The true Freedom Fighters, their children, their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren survived the aftermath of a reversal of what happened in South Africa and came to the fore when Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1994. Whatever happened, the beginning of colonialism that became the rule, the norm, the status quo and the law of the land and with it came the first heartfelt stirrings of oppression a little over three hundred years ago has now slowly with the width of a thread become undone. It was not the struggle of one man, woman or youth alone. The Freedom Fighters who died so I could be writing these words right now in relative freedom, occupied only with the art of creative expression and artistic license, from forces that would antagonise me, spirit me away, interrogate me, those Fighters died so we could survive. So that the ghosts that haunt us to this day, concealed in the lives of generations present and past could finally come to light, rest in matters of the rhythm, beating, drumming of our collective hearts, be seriously addressed, be debated amongst great theorists and futurists and be put to rest. Our relationships with each other’s cultures and races have been tender and strained but through the penetrating intellect of our writers and poets all of these stories will be told, their beauty will be resonated within us and we will tremble and we will become weak but that is the meaning and purpose of strength, courage and determination. You only have to look at Mahatma Gandhi to see why it is so, Mother Theresa, Florence Nightingale, Vincent van Gogh, the German composers, the French writers, the Nobel Prize winners in Africa, Ingrid Jonker, Bessie Head’s life and masterpiece ‘Maru’ and Susan Sontag. Strength is not a display of something equalling Samson’s brute strength, something brutal, violent, disturbing, aggressive and insensitive and an evil crime against humanity. Strength is a miracle, probing, truly magnificent and otherworldly. Africa, Africa, Africa you are mature, thoughtful, haunting, your energy blazes with the fury of two suns, your sons and daughters, sometimes you are paper thin, you make me run wild and free into the future. You chose me out of everyone to fall in love with you. I hope that all the children of Africa, past and present will feel that way about you. You are an infuriating but always forgivable child. You have filled my heart with so much beauty, stuffed it full with fire, exotic life and governed it with wrath. You soothed my brow with a feverish anticipation of what came after the next word. You leave me bedazzled and formidable every day. I take all your treasures with me wherever I go, secretly like a rogue. Forgive me. Africa, you are in a class of your own.

In closing, the world is not the same for women as it is for men. And so we come to reflect upon humanity from an African sensibility, the spirituality, the God, and gods, and the primitivism of the African female poet. We find that the African feminist familiarises herself with comforting rituals in the face of engendering equality, and peace in the childhood of her children, her self-imposed exile as a writer, and a poet in the landscape of timelines, the flesh of illness, her despair, and utter desolation, isolation, suicidal depression, cosmic bloodlines, and imagination. What does she yearn for? Not to fail, not to discriminate, but to create art, but to express herself, discover the interrelation (although her psychological and cultural framework is primitive) between the memory work of the role of art, creative expression, and the equilibrium of space, the personal space of the artist, and time. The African female poet walks wounded. In all seriousness she worships her wounds. Her wisdom comes from her life experience, and her journey from spiritual poverty, to the wealth of unbalanced dissonance. From the pinnacles of childhood to adulthood she recognises her place in the world first as a daughter, then as wife, and then as mother. Things of the spirit, of soul consciousness, consciousness-thinking will always come first. And the retrieval of all of those things comes to us whether in life, or death. In all of the roles she plays as mother, daughter, wife she is submissive (except as artist (existential phenomenologist), feminist (sage), matriarch (oracle), when she is creator, thinker, intellectual) but as I say only to a certain extent, but when in the glory of her wisdom she accommodates the psychological construct of the masculine she has already won her freedom, an identity, and a fractured psyche, a disseminated ego is no more, and so she challenges conventional wisdom. The messenger (the artist) changes the message’s (in the personality, in the growth of process, and in the progress from generation to generation) meaning, the context, the narrative, and the stream of consciousness thinking. Art serves to improve humanity. Art is a wilderness history. Art is the invention of woman. Art is the invention of man. There remains a duality between the two that needs to be acknowledged in the African Renaissance.

Top 5 Mental Math Methods in the World

HashFlare

Today you can define mental math in various different ways. Some would say, memorizing times table and remembering the solutions can form the part of mental mathematics. Some would say ability to perform simple calculations in your head can be mental mathematics.

The web dictionary defines mental mathematics as “Computing an exact answer without using pencil and paper or other physical aids.”

Today there are five methods available to learn and practice mental mathematics.

Let’s begin with the first one called ‘Learning by Heart’ or better known as the rote memorizing method where your teachers ask you to mug up boring multiplication tables. It not only kills the interest of the child in mathematics but also makes sure that he develops hatred towards the subject for the rest of the years he studies it. This system gives its ardent devotee some degree of success initially as he is able to answer easy problems but then when the supposedly bigger application problems come the steam is almost over.

The second one gives you a good degree of success and I would highly recommend it to the younger lot out there. It hails from China and is popular by the name of The Abacus (also known as the Soroban in Japan). An abacus is a calculating tool, often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires. With the use of this tool one can perform calculations relating to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with ease. Gradually one practices with the tool in one’s hand and later on when experienced he learns to do it without the tool. This tool is then fitted into the mind mentally and he can then add, subtract multiply and divide in seconds. This tool also enhances a child’s concentration levels.

The main drawback of this system is that it focuses only on the 4 mathematical operations. Concepts beyond these operations such as Algebra, Square Roots, Cubes, Squares, Calculus, and Geometry etc cannot be solved using it at all. Also one needs a longer time to be able to fully get a grasp of the system hence you see courses in the abacus stretching to over 2 years which leads the child to boredom and then quitting from the course.

Another Chinese system mainly collected from the book The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art lays out an approach to mathematics that centers on finding the most general methods of solving problems. Entries in the book usually take the form of a statement of a problem, followed by the statement of the solution, and an explanation of the procedure that led to the solution.

The methods explained in this system can hardly be termed mental and they lack speed to top it all. The Chinese were definitely the most advanced of the civilization thanks to the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers but if I were to choose out of the two methods given by this culture It would be the abacus.

If wars have a 99.99% downside, sometimes they can have an upside too for they give birth to stories of hope and creativity. The next mental math system was developed during the Second World War in the Nazi Concentration Camp by a Ukrainian Mathematician Jakow Trachtenberg to keep his mind occupied. What resulted is now known as the Trachtenberg Speed System of Mathematics and consists of Rapid Mental Methods of doing Mathematics.

The system consists of a number of readily memorized patterns that allow one to perform arithmetic computations very quickly. It has wider applications than the Abacus and apart from the four basic operation methods it covers Squares and Square Roots.

The method focuses mostly on Multiplication and it even gives patterns for multiplication by particular number say 5,6,7 and even 11 and 12. It then gives a general method for rapid multiplication and a special two finger method. After practicing the method myself I realized that the multiplication was a very applicable mental method but the other methods covered to solve division and square roots were not very friendly and were impossible to be done mentally. I was in search of a much better wholesome method where I could easily perform other operations also. Another drawback of this system was that it too like the abacus failed to have a wider scope i.e to encompass other fields like Algebra, Calculus, Trignometry, Cube Roots etc

A Recommendation by a friend of mine from America introduced me to what is known as the Kumon Math Method. It was founded by a Japanese educator Toru Kumon in 1950s and as of 2007 over 4 million children were studying under the Kumon Method in over 43 different countries.

Students do not work together as a class but progress through the curriculum at their own pace, moving on to the next level when they have achieved mastery of the previous level. This sometimes involves repeating the same set of worksheets until the student achieves a satisfactory score within a specified time limit. In North American Kumon Centers, the mathematics program starts with very basic skills, such as pattern recognition and counting, and progresses to increasingly challenging subjects, such as calculus, probability and statistics. The Kumon Method does not cover geometry as a separate topic but provides sufficient geometry practice to meet the prerequisites for trigonometry, which is covered within the Kumon math program.

I was much impressed with the glamour around Kumon but a glimpse of its curriculum deeply disappointed me. It is not mental at all. It does not offer any special methods to do mathematics and one does not improve one’s speed by doing Kumon Math. There is a set curriculum of worksheets which one does till one achieves mastery in the subject. So say for example a sheet on Divison- one would continue to do division by the conventional method till he gets a satisfactory score and then he moves on to a higher level. This certainly doesn’t make division any faster and the process is certainly not mental.

A deep thought on the reason of its tremendous popularity in America led me to conclude was the lack of a franchisee business model of the abacus and the Trachtenberg speed system in the 1950s. The franchisee model was essential in taking the course from country to country. This is where Toru Kumon thrived.

Dissapointed with other cultures in the world, my search made me look in my own Indian culture. What I found astonished and amazed me so much that I fell in love with the system and started coaching neighbourhood students in it.

This is easily the World’s Fastest Mental Mathematics System called High Speed Vedic Mathematics. It has its roots in Ancient Indian Scriptures called the Vedas meaning ‘the fountain head of knowledge’. With it not only you can add, subtract, multiply or divide which is the limiting factor of the abacus but you can also solve complex mathematics such as algebra, geometry, Calculus, and Trigonometry. Some of the most advanced, complex and arduous problems can be solved using the Vedic Maths method with extreme ease.

And all this with just 16 word formulas written in Sanskrit.

High Speed Vedic Mathematics was founded by Swami Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja who was the Sankaracharya (Monk of the Highest Order) of Govardhan Matha in Puri between 1911 and 1918. They are called “Vedic” as because the sutras are contained in the Atharva Veda – a branch of mathematics and engineering in the Ancient Indian Scriptures.

High Speed Vedic Mathematics is far more systematic, simplified and unified than the conventional system. It is a mental tool for calculation that encourages the development and use of intuition and innovation, while giving the student a lot of flexibility, fun and satisfaction . For your child, it means giving them a competitive edge, a way to optimize their performance and gives them an edge in mathematics and logic that will help them to shine in the classroom and beyond.

Therefore it’s direct and easy to implement in schools – a reason behind its enormous popularity among academicians and students. It complements the Mathematics curriculum conventionally taught in schools by acting as a powerful checking tool and goes to save precious time in examinations.

The Trachtenberg Method is often compared to Vedic Mathematics. Infact even some of the multiplication methods are strikingly similar. The Trachtenberg system comes the closest to the Vedic System in comparison and ease of the methods. But the ease and mental solvability of the other method especially division, square roots, cube roots, Algebraic Equations, Trigonometry, Calculus etc clearly gives the Vedic System an edge. Even NASA is said to be using some of this methods applications in the field of artificial intelligence.

There are just 16 Vedic Math sutras or word formulas which one needs to practice in order to be efficient in Vedic Math system. Sutras or Word Math Formulas such as the Vertically and Crosswise, All from Nine and Last from ten helps to solve complex problems with ease and also a single formula can be applied in two or more fields at the same time. The Vertically and Crosswise formula is one such gem by which one can multiply, find squares, solve simultaneous equations and find the determinant of a matrix all at the same time.

If either of these methods is learned at an early age, a student aged 14 can perform lightening fast calculations easily during his examinations and ace through them.

Vedic Mathematics is fast gaining popularity in this millennium. It is being considered as the only mental math system suited for a child as it helps to develop his numerical as well as mental abilities. The methods are new and practical and teach only Mental Rapid Mathematics.

The system does not focus on learning by repetition as in the Kumon Method. The system focuses on improving intelligence by teaching fundamentals and alternate methods. The purpose is not limited to improving performance in the school or tests, but on providing a broader outlook resulting in improved mathematical intelligence and mental sharpness.

Warehouse Artist Studios

HashFlare

An artist/bohemian type working for themselves is perceived in a variety of ways by the general public. A lot of the perception has to do with a combination of the artist’s cashflow and apparel strategy, as opposed to the stirrings of their soul. Strangely, as a young man, people often saw me as a responsible, solid guy. Ha!

In the early eighties I ran my screen printing operation out of a funky old warehouse by the railroad tracks in Eugene, Oregon. Enormous pastry and coffee in hand, I’d get to my shop a bit past nine and dig in for the day. Usually I’d run out of work between 1:00 and 3:00 pm, leaving the rest of the day to run, draw comics and hang out.

Being that the economy had had the shit kicked out of it just then, I was moderately proud that I’d been able to scape up enough business to keep a roof over my head… ultimately I turned enough of a profit to embark on my checkered career publishing my own wacky comic books, but that’s not the subject of this rant.

Warehouse Artists Studios was the literal name of the co-op warehouse wherein I rented space. The studio took up the second floor of a truly dilapidated old funkster warehouse that had most recently been used to store spices. Add to that the gay girls who lived illegally in the space next to mine, burning patchouli oil night and day. This place had a certain bouquet!

I’d been printing T-Shirt jobs out of my flat, and it was getting a bit ridiculous. At an opening in a local gallery, I saw a flyer for “Warehouse Artist Studios”, a 5000 square foot space that magically divided up the floor into 170 square foot units that rented for forty bucks a month. I went down the next day and rented two adjacent spaces, which apparently I’d be paying $75 or $80 a month for. A slight, nervous man named Lynn rented my space to me. He was the manager, he had a chair upholstering business in the studio. Straight away, I could see ‘ol Lynn was a duck seriously out of water.

This impression was dramatically confirmed like three days later when Lynn informed me that the Warehouse was failing economically, and that he was resigning as manager. He handed me the studio ledger and checkbook saying “you seem like an astute fellow, why don’t you manage this dump?”.

I was rather taken aback at this, but sure enough at the next meeting of the co-op, the members all but begged me to save their studio. I had my serious doubts, but figured there wasn’t much to lose, so why not? It wasn’t lost on me either that as manager my rent for my 340 square foot space dipped to $35.00 per month!

The co-op had about 12 members. We were several hundred dollars in the hole. We could pay rent, but couldn’t pay the heating bill. We were required to carry basic liability insurance, which had gone unpaid and lapsed, for starters. I sat down and did a bit of math. I figured if we raised the rent on the basic space about $10.00 a month for five months, and attracted a couple new members, we’d squeak by and could continue renting the dump.

The measure passed at the next meeting. At least with the eight or nine people who decided to stick it out, as a couple members dropped out with the news of the temporary rent increase; we did indeed need to attract new members straight away. We papered the town with flyers for the warehouse, and got free listings in any newspaper we could. Miraculously, the plan worked. We lowered the basic rent back to $40.00 per month ahead of schedule and got an infusion of fresh blood. I can’t take too much credit for it, as the place snapped to with an esprit de corps I’ve rarely encountered… I’d say it was goddamn grassroots socialism is action, almost.

Now here comes the fun part, the personalities that made the place click, the swashbucklers, crackpots, con men, assholes, and outright brilliant geniuses I encountered in my stint at Warehouse Artist Studios. First comes a woman named Kathy Caprario. She was a dramatic beauty from New York of Italian descent, the best known painter in Eugene, an “older woman” to me of maybe 33-35 years (I was all of 24 at the time). Kathy is the person who was singlehandedly most responsible for the survival of Warehouse Artist Studios at the time of the financial crises. To say she was resourceful and a bit of an aggressive shark is an understatement. For starters, she marched me down to see the owner of the owner of the building when the lease came up. The guy was a real estate money grubbing slum lord type, who claimed an artistic background. Right. Our rent was $650.00 per month. Kathy figured that Jeff, the slum lord, was lucky that anyone at all was renting this dump in a crappy ecomomy. She advises me to offer the guy $450.00 per month. No problem! It was an invaluable early lesson in having brass balls.

So we’re in this real estate lizard’s office, and I make the rent offer. Jeff, the lizard in question, completely ignores me and starts this serious, near lecherous flirt with Kathy. She plays this guy like a fiddle, and we walk out of there with a lease for the next year of $550.00 per month, a hundred bucks per month rent reduction. Yes folks, in 1982 in Eugene, you could rent a 5000 square foot studio for that low price. I should mention too, the year after that, Kathy had moved on to a private studio space, but I’d learned well and got that damn rent down to $475.00 per month!

Kathy also had us apply for City of Eugene room tax grants. Turns out there was actual civic support for the arts afoot! We hastily threw together grant applications to run a gallery in our common space, such as it was, and to offer figure drawing sessions to the public. Given the level of initial interest in these projects, we all saw it as a way to get the city to help pay our rent with minimal execution of said projects.

But who knew! The figure drawing sessions maintained a core of attendance for a couple years. The gallery stared off as nothing–an unrented space was hung with art. But before long, a 22 year old painter of promise named Mike Perkin rented a space and started doing some pretty cool work in his cubicle. He tried his best to ape Francis Bacon, but the works looked a bit like Francis was a werewolf Mexican wrestler or something.

When it came Mike’s turn to show his work, he turned a critical eye at the tiny room where I asked him to hang his paintings. He asked me if I had the studio checkbook. What do you have in mind, Mike? He directed me to the Eugene Planing Mill, a massive lumber yard across the street from us. “Let’s stud up couple walls so I can hang my big paintings”. Outragous! Here’s this wild kid, plays the same tapes over and over (Scarey Monsters by Bowie, anything by Lou Reed) and yells at his paintings. At the drop of a hat, we get some lumber and flail away for a couple hours with hammers. Before you know it, instant gallery! We build some pretty decent walls in a jiffy (other studio members drifted in a pitched in) and whitewashed them.

Mike’s paintings for that show were terrific. They were done in ruddy reds, earthtones and orangey yellows, with wood and burlap assemblage fastened to the canvases. The average size was maybe 3′ across by almost 5′ tall. My favorite was called “The Inside of Lou Reed’s Stomach”. If I wasn’t blowing every cent on publishing comic books, I woulda bought it. The opening was a revelation. Mike’s family showed up, and they were the most amazing bunch of open minded art, theatre, film and literature lovers you could imagine. A lotta beer went down. I remember late at night, Mike’s mom was wrestling on the studio floor with one of her four sons. From there on in, our little gallery stood a few decent shows, and even better parties. And through it all, the city kept the checks coming!

Keith the retired Air Force colonel is next in our cast of characters. Bald, prim, post heart attack, gentle former Texan Keith. A late life painter, an ultra practical man. Ruled by logic on the outside, soft as a grape inside, he had a good heart even if it was failing him, he did his share to keep the warehouse afloat. He painted small landscapes that revealed a luminous take on Oregon’s rainy colors. Nothin’ amazing, but nice. Fluid, painterly, sea foam light permeating the canvas with a bit of warm ochre and alizarin crimson, tacking it to the surface of the earth.

Keith enjoyed regaling the Warehouse crew over beers with stories of flying B-52’s through mushroom clouds after bomb tests in the Pacific, back in the day. Knowing that I was involved in the anti-nuke movement of the day, he teased me “I did H-Bomb tests all day long, and I’m not glowing yet”.

Although he had a son who was around forty, Keith took a fatherly interest in me, and used to take me to lunch in his enormous four door GM pickup truck (with one of those worthless diesel engines they tried to manufacture for a couple years). He’d take us to the local Lions clubhouse. The food sucked. He’d insist we have a beer with lunch, which I didn’t like as I usually would go for a run later in the day. Hell Steve, have a beer, indulge the old boy! Unbidden, he told me his life story. Before retirement, had risen as an assistant to one of the joint chiefs of staff. After retiring from the military, he’d been a ROTC instructor on the University of Oregon campus in the sixties. He’d have run ins with various rag-tag groups of pseudo Maoist college kids. Then one summer, Keith and his wife were vacationing in the Cascade mountains east of Eugene. Hiking in the foothills, they came upon an encampment where some of these same youths were enacting a military training drill with assault rifles! They were indeed serious about the revolution bit. After a tense momentary face off with no word exchanged, Keith and his wife turned on their heel and hiked out. “I felt like I had a target on my back”, he said, adding that he never saw those kids again.

There was another older painter at the studio, one Nick Nickolds. He was maybe 60-65 at the time. He was the real deal, a life long bohemian, painter and philosopher dedicated to the pursuit of his art. He’d been an orphan from Denver who lived the middle decades of his life in Mexico. Nick scored the studio to the right at the top of the stairs. It was the best studio there, as it had a separate private entrance.

Nick Nickolds painted in a style that at once reminded me of William Blake and Titian. His color was rich, saturated and full of light, yet he built up layers of delicate glazes that gave body and air to his figures. He was painting the figure, faces, and the natural world, yet it was semi abstract. It was as if Blake had decided to lapse into abstraction and gotten about 73% there before deciding he still had to have a face here, an eye or a breast there.

This work was technically masterful and evoked images and emotion like a skeleton key. It alluded to everything while putting it’s finger on nothing, like a Robert Hunter lyric. Nick was so consistently true, dignified and full of heart that you had to love him. He was a slightly rotund, dapper little man with ample sparkle in his eye.

Once, Nick showed me a vial full of crystalline dust, claiming that it was a sort of emulsified, crystal LSD. He stuck a pin in it, putting a minuscule amount on the head of the pin. “That’s enough”, he said. He claimed he’d had the vial for years, had been in San Francisco in the sixties with it (it was full back then). He asserted he’d provided hundreds and hundreds of trips from his little vial. Today, I almost wonder if I made that part of the story up! It just sounds too good to be true.

Nick was a guy who was always fascinating, who revealed himself to me a little bit at a time as we became friends. He approved of my comic books, and my attempts to explain the nature of reality, time, the singularity of the eternal now in cartoon form, and all that jazz. Nick told me I was on the right track as an artist. “All you have to do is be careful about the beer”, he advised me, and boy was he right, as I developed enough of a drinking habit that I ultimately had to stop altogether for my own good. Nick eventually moved back into what he considered the morass of Marin County, as he had money connections down in California. I never saw him again, don’t know if he’s still around or not. I often reflect on what Nick taught me about maintaining integrity as an artist, and about having respect for every human being regardless of anything. I consider it immense good fortune to have known Nick and been his friend, albeit for only a couple of years.

P.S. Nick is indeed still around, at http://www.nicknickolds.com

Freak Magnet!

If you manage to set yourself up as a successful Boho freelancer/self employed artist, you will attract an amazing array of people from all walks of life to bask in your glory. Say what? Take my word for it, people will be attracted to your good thang, offering everything from sublime lessons in human dignity, to blatantly vampiric attempts to hi-jack your time and energy.

With a bit of practice, it becomes easy to recognize the latter–within minutes of meeting the vampiric leach, they attempt to wrangle the discourse to a place where you are somehow in the position of owing them something; most often a deep discount on your product or service. You’ll see a red flag, and you will get rid of them asap. Try adding a 50% “asshole fee” to your usual rate. When they get ugly, be sweet as pie but stick to your guns. And remember, you don’t owe them a thing.

The other sort, offering the sublime lesson, a peek into the bottomless well of the beauty of the human spirit, can be a real pleasure. They will probably try your patience a bit too, but it’s worth it. My rule of thumb is to attempt to offer the same basic respect to any person I come across in the course of my business. Easier said than done, but something to aim for.

As a self employed freak magnet, it’s been my great pleasure to encounter quite an array of swashbucklers. How about the charismatic actor who financed his theater company (and his t-shirts) with a successful drug dealing operation? He did quite well with it, but I guess his success was tempered by the little fact that he was a junkie…

One of my favorite encounters with an unusual person came early in my “career”, when I maintained a screen printing operation at Warehouse Artist Studios in Eugene, Oregon in the early ’80s. One fine rainy morning, when nothing much was going on, a slightly bellicose balding guy named Abner Burnett stepped through the door and asked how much I would charge to print one t-shirt. Sorry, minimum order is two dozen. OK, how much for two dozen?

Abner ends up ordering something like 2 shirts. He understands that the economies of scale are not working for him, that with set up charges, these will be very expensive shirts, but he doesn’t seem to mind. I wish I could remember what the design was–it may have had something to do with his beloved Chevy Vega (those were great cars, right up there with the Ford Pinto!). As Abner cuts me a downpayment check, he notes that he lives off a trust fund, and is bored, and is really glad he met me. Great.

When will the shirts be done? I can print them on Tuesday, I’ll call you when they are done.

Arriving at the warehouse on Tuesday morning, I am less than thrilled to find Abner at the door waiting for me with a curious half smile on his face. This is the first time I think, “axe murderer”. Turns out Abner wants to watch me print his shirts. He wants to learn about screen printing. Usually, it unnerves me to have a customer watch a production run, but hey, it’s only two shirts. And, Abner said he wants to learn about screen printing. He said the magic words. I love teaching people how to screen print. I figure it’s like teaching a poor man to fish. Or, it’s like giving someone a lesson in a tool that can be used to exercise your first amendment rights. So I am into it.

As I set up and print his job, Abner opines, “Mr. Lafler, I can tell that you are independently wealthy”. I bark out such a hearty laugh that I almost botch a print. “What makes you say that, Abner?”

“Well, you just leisurely hang out at your studio every day, doing just what you want.”

The fact is, Mr. Burnett, I am here in the studio to try to scrape together a couple bucks, with which to buy some burritos, beer and a can of food for Ed, my cat. If I make some extra cash, maybe I’ll publish a comic book or two, but independently wealthy? Ha!

Abner pays for his shirts, and he’s gone. I enjoyed the encounter, but I also was happy that it’s over. Or so I thought. Abner started showing up at my studio almost daily, to “learn screen printing”. He would stand there, half glassy eyed, issuing a series of loosely related comments that weren’t quite non sequiturs. One day I tried to leave, just to shake him. “Where you going?”, Abner wants to know. “I’m going to get some screen printing supplies”, I say. Abner wants to drive. Oh hell, why not? I don’t have a car.

Although I didn’t exactly like Abner, I was just a bit fascinated by him. What the hell was he up to? What was his story? He kinda gave me the creeps, but he exuded a thickly benign sense of serenity.

The jig was up one day when he came in, affable yet strangely agitated at the same time. What’s up, Abner? “Mr. Lafler, I’m a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, and I didn’t take my medication today”.

Okay. That explained a lot. Abner came around a few more times, then I guess he lost interest. As mentioned, he made me rather nervous, yet I was curious enough about him to indulge his presence. I like to think he was just another manifestation of Buddha nature, come to teach me a lesson, or something like that.

How to Remove Cat Urine Odor Using a Free Homemade Recipe

HashFlare

Last year we purchased a home that been soiled by the previous owners’ cat.

We thought that having the carpets professionally cleaned would take care of it

but it just made the problem worse.

After using several well-advertised and expensive cat urine removal products that

didn’t work, I was searching on the web for a solution and found a homemade

remedy that uses three simple household products. Desperate I tried it and

wouldn’t you know it – it worked!

So well that I had to find out why and researched the chemistry and origins of the

recipe. I found out it was developed originally by a chemist for neutralizing the

proteins in skunk odor, which are the same proteins found in cat urine and give it

it’s horrible smell!

Cat urine is not much different from any other urine, be it human or other animals.

It is made up urea, creatinine, uric acid, sodium and other electrolytes. When cat

urine dries the urea gets broken down by bacteria which gives it that distinctive

ammonia smell. As it decomposes further it releases thiols which make the cat

urine odor worse yet.

The recipe works because the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda

produces large amount of oxygen. The oxygen molecules bond to the thiols,

breaking them up into carbon dioxide and ammonia, that evaporates quickly

thereby effectively neutralizing the thoils and their foul-smelling odor.

THE RECIPE

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Gently mix all ingredients in a non-metal container. Do not mix or shake

vigorously!

The mixture is best used when fresh but can be stored. Do not keep mixture in an

airtight container as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide when mixed together

release loads of oxygen. We don’t want an explosion on our hands on top of the

mess we already have!

I mix and keep mine in a large spray bottle I bought from Home Depot but on old

plastic liter soda bottle works just a well. Just remember to keep the cap on

loose.

3% hydrogen peroxide can be bought at most grocery and drug stores in pint

and quart bottles.

A word of caution:

Surfaces that are porous may swell e.g. drywall, wood flooring, particle board,

etc. with application of this recipe. But if your surface is already ruined by cat

urine and you want to get rid of the odor until you can replace it – give it a try.

Always test for color-fastness when using first. Apply to a small area and wait

24-48 hours until dry before using on an entire area. Hydrogen peroxide is a

bleaching agent in stronger concentrations (think teeth whiteners) and can lighten

materials that are not color-fast.

April In Thailand: Songkran

HashFlare

Songkran in Thailand is traditionally about washing away your sins and bad luck from the previous year and getting ready to renew yourself for the year ahead. Many Thai’s will go back to their family homes and eat, drink and play games with their elders. There are a number of rituals that will take place like washing each other and visiting temples.

For younger people and tourists, Songkran is about having fun by throwing water and flour or powder over each other. There are a number of celebrations throughout the country with Bangkok leading the way with the most organized events and celebrations. If you are traveling through this year, then it’s a must see and participate event but you must also remember to stay safe, here are a few tips.

1. Make sure the water isn’t hot or salty – Some will try to spray you with salty water or unclean water, be careful of this especially in some of the smaller streets around the capital or provinces.

2. Avoid wet powder if you can – It is part of the tradition to smear powder on your face but this could be anything and within a few days can give you a very nasty rash, it’s best to avoid contact with anyone trying to smear you with powder.

3. Remember the culture – Don’t walk down the road of the capital with no shirt on or just a bikini, there are still laws about dressing appropriately in Thailand. Make sure you are not too revealing, it can get very hot but you are also a visitor in another country and you must observe their laws.

4. Put all your valuables in a plastic bag – No matter how much you try to avoid the water in the capital, you are almost certain to end up drenched through. Make sure you are carrying your phone, your watch, your camera, your wallet in a plastic zipped bag. These can be bought locally so don’t worry but it’s a must have if you want to enjoy the festivities.

5. Beware of pickpockets – Although this is sound advice when traveling anywhere and at any time of the year, unfortunately, festivals bring about the worst in people and when you are getting caught up in the atmosphere it’s easy to forget about your valuables and you can be sure there will be someone ready to relieve you of them if you are not careful.

Having said all that, Songkran is a great festival and one to be enjoyed, so please have fun!
